Genesis G80, G90, GV70, GV80 Engine Recall in 2026
Genesis recalls models with the Smartstream FR G3.5T 6-cyl over a fuel pump and oil pressure issue. Here's who's affected and the dealer fix.

Genesis is recalling US-market G80, G90, GV70, and GV80 models equipped with the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (Smartstream FR G3.5T) over a problem in the fuel-pump assembly that, in worst-case conditions, can cause oil pressure loss and engine stall. NHTSA's filing is small in volume relative to the Ford 26C10 campaign, but it covers some of the brand's flagship cars and the fix requires a dealer visit. If you own one, you want this on the calendar.
What's wrong
The Smartstream FR G3.5T high-pressure fuel pump can develop a manufacturing defect in the seal between the pump's drive cam follower and the engine's camshaft. As the seal degrades, lubricating oil can mix with fuel under specific operating conditions, mostly sustained high-rpm operation followed by low-load cruising. In the small number of warranty cases Genesis has reviewed, the symptom progression goes:
- Check Engine light with codes P0087 (low rail pressure) or P008A (low fuel pressure)
- Rough running and momentary stumbling under acceleration
- Eventual engine stall, almost always at low speed where the no-restart condition is most noticeable
Genesis has confirmed the fault occurs in the manufacturing process at the supplier, not in the engine design. There have been no reported injuries.
Affected vehicles
| Model | Years | Engine | Estimated US units |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genesis G80 3.5T | 2022-2025 | Smartstream FR G3.5T | ~28,000 |
| Genesis G90 3.5T | 2023-2025 | Smartstream FR G3.5T | ~9,500 |
| Genesis GV70 3.5T | 2022-2025 | Smartstream FR G3.5T | ~22,000 |
| Genesis GV80 3.5T | 2021-2025 | Smartstream FR G3.5T | ~31,000 |
Total US-market exposure is roughly 90,000 vehicles. The 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder versions of these models (G80 2.5T, GV70 2.5T, GV80 2.5T) are not affected, neither are GV70 EV or GV80 e-Supercharger trims.
What Genesis is doing
The fix has two stages:
- Software update at the dealer (15 to 30 minutes). New ECU calibration adjusts the fuel-pump operating window to reduce the conditions that accelerate the seal degradation. This reduces the failure rate substantially while not eliminating it.
- Pump assembly inspection (2 to 4 hours). Dealers will inspect the pump for visible signs of degradation. Vehicles with the early-stage fault get the pump assembly replaced under warranty. Vehicles that pass the inspection get a new pump warranty stamp extending coverage to 10 years/120,000 miles regardless of original warranty status.
The repair is free under federal recall law. Owners will receive certified-mail notification beginning early May 2026.
What to do today
- Run your VIN. The free NHTSA recall lookup will show you whether your specific vehicle is covered. Genesis Owners portal also flags recalls in real time.
- Schedule with a Genesis dealer if your vehicle is included. Hyundai dealers can also perform the repair where Genesis service capacity is constrained.
- Watch for symptoms. Any rough idle, momentary stumbling, or Check Engine light should not be ignored. Stop driving and call the dealer for a tow if the engine stalls or refuses to restart.
- Document everything. If you've already had related warranty work or paid out of pocket for diagnosis, keep your records. Genesis is offering reimbursement for qualifying out-of-pocket costs going back to original purchase.
Bigger picture
Hyundai Motor Group's Smartstream engine family has been on the market since 2019 and is broadly reliable. This recall is the second high-profile defect found in the FR G3.5T variant after a 2024 timing-chain TSB (not a recall) on early production engines. The fix Genesis is rolling out should resolve the issue cleanly. If you own one of these cars and weren't planning to keep it long-term, the recall completion stamp helps resale meaningfully. If you are a long-term owner, the extended warranty Genesis is adding to repaired pumps is a real benefit worth taking.
For shoppers considering a CPO (certified pre-owned) Genesis G80 3.5T, GV70 3.5T, or GV80 3.5T in the next few months, ask the dealer to confirm the recall completion before you sign. The campaign code will be visible on the CARFAX and on Genesis's owner portal.
